Washington Redskins Now Known as the Washington Pigskins, to Some

Isn’t the new name insensitive to Porcine-Americans?  (Not to mention boring and redundant, what with footballs being called pigskins…)

Not a year goes by that activists don’t call for the Washington Redskins to drop the team’s controversial name and mascot. Polls are taken, lawsuits filed, but the name endures. Many consider it straight-forward racism, while others, including Dan Snyder, one of the NFL’s least-loved owners, do not.

The Washington City Paper, which falls in the former category, has taken matters into its own hands. Two weeks ago editor Mike Madden announced the paper would be renaming the team by reader vote. The team formerly known as the Redskins will henceforth be referred to in City Paper as … The Washington Pigskins, A.K.A. The Hogs, a tribute to the team’s onetime dominant offensive line. Helpfully, the new name allows for the continuation of the popular ’Skins abbreviation.

‘Diversity’ and ‘Equality’ Really Mean Uniformity of Thought

Two recent examples, where opponents of same-sex marriage find themselves silenced or questioned:

One from the U.K.:

Sir Paul Coleridge, the Family Division judge who recently launched a new charity to combat marital break-up, had been lined up as the main speaker at the annual event at the Law Society’s London headquarters later this month.

But organisers were forced to cancel it at short notice after the Law Society ruled that the programme reflected “an ethos which is opposed to same sex marriage”.

And one from Australia.

Professor Kuruvilla George, who is Victoria’s deputy chief psychiatrist, has signed a submission to a senate inquiry calling for a ban on same-sex marriage.

He is among a group of doctors, who in a letter to the marriage equality inquiry, say limiting marriage between a man and woman “is important for the future health of our nation”.

“We submit that the evidence is clear that children who grow up in a family with a mother and father do better in all parameters than children without,” the Doctors for the Family group says.

Victorian opposition attorney-general Martin Pakula said Prof George needs to explain to the government and the community why he should remain a board member on the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC), given his views.

“The equal opportunity commission are regularly asked to deal with matters where people are alleging discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and I don’t know how Prof George can properly deal with those matters given the sentiments he’s expressed,” Mr Pakula told reporters.

Political correctness is another form of gleichschaltung.

School Covers Mural for Depicting a Man, Woman and Child

The above mural by 17-year-old student Liz Bierendy was ordered painted over because of the family depicted on the right.  (Hat tip: DW)

According to Horoshack’s press release the scene was painted over because “some of the members of the Pilgrim High Schoolcommunity suggested that the depiction of a young man’s development from boyhood through adulthood as displayed may not represent the life experiences of many of the students at Pilgrim High School.”

Miss Bierendy calls the controversy ‘ridiculous‘.  (HT: Oz Conservative)

The section of the mural featuring the family was ordered painted over by school officials. Bierendy said she was notified prior but she was still “pretty upset.”

As well she should be, IMO.

Blank Bless the U.S.A.

School Removes “God” From Lee Greenwood Song.  (HT: Elusive Wapiti)

Parents at a Massachusetts elementary school are furious after educators first removed the word ‘God’ from the popular Lee Greenwood song, “God Bless the U.S.A.” and then pulled the song all together from an upcoming concert.

Fox 25 in Boston is reporting that children at Stall Brook Elementary School in Bellingham were told to sing, “We love the U.S.A.” instead of “God Bless the U.S.A.”
