Why Modern Playgrounds Suck – The Death of Awesome Play Equipment

I’ve been ranting about this for years, too.  (Hat tip: DYSPEPSIA GENERATION)

What you see above is the type of playground that was common before the 1990s – the type of playground that is both awesome, and able to harm children in many  grisly ways – a feature which makes it doubly awesome. In the last 20 years,  parents have lobbied to crack down on these so-called “dangerous” playgrounds  because of their fear of harm coming to their lame-ass kids. Apparently modern  parents think it’s a bad thing for their sons and daughters to come home with  gaping animal wounds, or broken bones, and that’s where I say they’re  wrong.

Frickin’ safety-Nazis…

  1. There is one playground in our area that still has a nerry-go-round, and my kids love it.

The push to take the danger and adventure out of childhood is an unfortunate trend that shows no sign of relenting.

  2. It’s sad. Modern playgrounds are pathetic, compared to those of yesteryear… I fell off monkey bars, slides, half-geodesic domes; I had other injuries; I healed. A balance has to be struck, between safety and fun. You can’t make anything fully risk-proof; kids could still fall off modern playground equipment and possibly hurt themselves. Should we then ban all equipment? (I’d better not give them ideas, lol.)
